Default Just bought the game

Hi all,

I just bought the game and i went for the Nightfall version.

Im not new to mmo's but would like a tip on what professions would get me a group more often.

I have played a tank in other mmo's but would like to avoid that this time.

First of all Welcome to Guild Wars
The best advice I can give you is to read up on the guild wars wiki about the professions and see which one appeals to you most. Or for a more 'hands on' approach try them all and see which play style you would like to take further. You can always re-roll characters so there's no 'once you create you can't get rid.'
If I'm reading it right you've bought only nightfall? That will give you 4 character slots, buy the other 2 campaigns plus the expansion will give you a further 4 slots so you'll have 8 in total.
As for which profession gets you into teams then it will be necromancers, elementalists and monks in my opinion. Find yourself a guild with like minded people and they should help you what ever profession you choose. Guild members are more likely to help you regardless of profession then a 'pick up group'.

Yes it was only the nightfall version that i purchased just so that i could see whether i liked the game or not.

In Pc gamer magazine it said that if you haven't tried the game yet then this is a good place to start.
If i enjoy the game then i will purchase the rest later.
Im on the EU server and i hope that i find some guilds that are happy to take new players.

I think the monk is a funny profession and is easily pugged.
Don't think the monk only heals though.

Only problem is that nightfall monk skills are generally not considered very good. Pugs will likely drop you like a hot potato once you ping your build.

First of all, Welcome to Guild Wars,

Have a look at our Campfire section to give yourself an insight to the professions.

Take your time there is no need to rush, Guys you see rushing are ones who may have rolled a char and know there way around and do not wish to stay in the (learning zone for long.)

Play what you enjoy..as you only have Nightfall at the moment try a Necro or an Elementist.As you dont wish to tank and really nobody tanks in guild wars as such ie warrior.

The options will increase if and when you purchase the other campaigns and the expansion Eye of the North

Any char you may have made if and when you purchase the others can travel to the other campaigns at a port city so thay can play in all.

A thing to mind tho is.as with one campaign you are restricted to the skills only in that campaign whereas if you had them all you can obtain all skills relavant to that profession

BTW as europe the game is cheap on internet like Play.com Amazon ect
you can proberly get all the rest for under ??15.as a compilation like complete collection ect so when you feel the urge have a look around for compilation packs ect.

About professions...
Necro / Ele are wanted in teams... and they are very flexible (is it good word?) professions, so I think You will find a build that suits You

If you are concerned about joining groups, Monks are always wanted in PuGs as healers. It doesn't matter what other classes or builds also make good healers, nor does it matter that well setup Heroes are usually better at healing - PUGs still want human monks.
The nice thing about Monks is that they can be used for other things besides just healing, of course.

You may find that you will often times just play with Heroes and Henchmen instead of PUGs anyway. In that case, you would probably want to play as some sort of Smiting/DPS Monk (Mo/Me, Mo/E, etc.) instead of a healer so that you can "direct" the group better. (Look up "RoJ Monk" for some ideas.)

Unlike some other RPGs, GW allows you to change builds very easily using Templates. This means that you don't have to only be a healer, or smiter, or whatever. You can save a number of different builds and switch to them as you like. And, it doesn't cost anything to switch builds, unlike in some RPGs (like WoW) where "re-spec'ing" becomes costly.

These days, it seems that most PUGs I see (doing the Zaishen quests) are looking for heal and/or protection Monks or SoS (spirit spammer) Ritualists. You'd need to purchase Factions to make a Ritualist though.

** Bottom line ** - Given the option to use Heroes and Henchmen, you could do any class that suits your fancy. What's popular for groups is of only secondary importance.

P.S. Because of the age of the game, and because much of the "action" these days is in Eye of the North, you won't find very many PUGs doing ordinary quests and missions. You will need to outfit some Heroes - don't be cheap, spend the time and gold to properly set them up.

Wellcome to GW! I finished Nightfall some time ago and I must say I really enjoyed it, great atmosphere & great storyline.

You asked abou profession - let's face reality: it is really hard to get group of people to play together and people serching for PUGs will probably accept any class (you both will have have plenty of heroes so no problem to adjust). Many missions and most quests you will be doing with you heroes only, therefore choose class more according what role you want to play to play with your heroes.

For example as a warrior or dervish you will probably go to the center of the fight and let your heroes to heal/protect you and cast spells over your head. Paragon is similar, just few steps backwards, combining spear attacks with party support. As elementalist you you send some hero(es) to fight hand to hand, other to heal them and YOU will be casting spells over their heads. Necro can be similar or can be taking care of private army of undead. I would not recommend monk so much as others do, heroes really can play monk pretty good and as a monk you will be most time watching health bars of your heroes/henchies, not actual game. Don't go for mesmer either unless you strongly feel like try one.

If you are not planning to buy other campaigns (which by the way is good idea and you can find bargain price for whole GW), dervish and paragon has one big advantage - in Nightfall you can find all theirs skills (except few from Eye of The North expansion).

SY! for paras and Aohm for dervishs are very commonly used skills for each class - and they're in factions. dont expect to be able to run every bar you want without factions.

Welcome to Guild Wars You can switch between American / Europe servers btw

The primary tank profession is a warrior. The other classes can avoid tanking imo.
Take a look at the wiki page if u are in trouble. They always have an answer if u search correctly

The suggestions for Wiki and Guru Campfire are right on.

Also try to get into a guild as there are many that will help you along with missions, quests and other segments of the game.

The game and Anet are far from perfect and the community has it's share of knuckleheads but by no means is it "horrendous" or a "waste".

It really comes down to the playstyle that you want to go by.

Paragons are decent support characters with their shout/chant buffs and have close to warrior grade armor despite being ranged. their main weapon is the spear which they throw from a distance at enemies.

Dervishes are scythe wielding fighters in hooded cloaks that excel at buffing themselves and dealing close range AoE damage.

Warriors are pretty much what you would expect.

Mesmers are manipulation casters that tend to focus on messing up what others can do or putting hexes on them that punish them for taking certain actions or cause health degen.

Elementalist would be your basic mage

Necromancers are good for a number of things. They can mess up what others have through hexes, they can raise a small undead army and they can focus on outright spell damage.

Rangers would pretty much be what you would expect. Pets, Bow and some wilderness skills such as setting traps.

Monks are good for healing, protective spells and spell damage.

There are also assassins and ritualists. However, you won't have access to those two classes until you get factions.

The assassin is pretty much the rogue type class. Except instead of stealth they use teleport skills to quickly get up to an enemy or away from him and have some defensive and self healing skills.

Ritualists are good for healing, outright damaging spells and summoning stationary spirits that either attack or give helpful buffs to nearby allies.



The GW1 series isn't getting as many updates as it used to because Arenanet has changed it's focus over to making GW2. However, by the time you have gone through all of the good stuff in this game it won't be long before GW2 will be out. So have fun. I have been playing this for over 4 years now and still enjoy it.

colosusjokers descriptions are basic, but all those professions can do things others can differently, nearly as well, better, or just as good compared to others.

Dagger paragons and healer/protection elementalists, etc.

In PvE, you can make up and exceed others not by profession, but by skill.

Yea, pretty much. I didn't want to make things seem overly complicated to the guy since he's new.

Through use of secondary classes Hellmut you can easily take on aspects of other classes and mix them with those of your primary class. Hell, for a while I was running around on my mesmer using a spirit spammer build by having ritualist as my secondary class.

Sorry i haven't got back to anyone yet in game as i only read the messages this morning.

I rolled an easy going class (ranger) and i am enjoying it so far.

However the idea of the monk does sound good. Now that i have learnt a little bit i may give it a go sometime this week (my gameplay will be casualish).

I am already in a guild and talking on vent where the players seem very nice.

My first impressions are very good and i cant believe that the game doesnt require a sub.

If i wasnt so committed to another game that has a sub i would drop it like a stone.
